The Kooks – Ten Tracks to Echo within the Darkish | Album assessment

Now 16 years on from their era-defining debut Inside In/Inside Out that set the bar for a technology of acoustic guitar-wielding different acts, the Kooks are again for his or her sixth studio album, Ten Tracks to Echo within the Darkish, which proves to be the best departure from their authentic sound so far.

Writing and recording in Berlin with the assistance of German pop-duo Milky Likelihood, producer Tobias Kuhn and EDM artist Neikid, the Kooks have taken a European strategy to their newest album, melding their iconic acoustic sound (helmed by frontman Luke Pritchard’s breezy vocals) with a tinge of continental electronica and disco beats. The album’s opener, the shimmery Connection, alerts a direct shift in type for the trailblazing Brighton band, with rolling bass strains and reverberating vocals. It’s a marked departure for the indie group, identified for summery, seaside Brit anthems She Strikes in Her Personal Manner and All the time The place I Have to Be, lastly embracing the disco-tinged sound that propelled the careers of so lots of their American 00s counterparts (assume Hockey and Foster the Individuals). Chilly Coronary heart is Kooks à la Yeasayer, with heavy drumbeats and a swirling, artificial sound. The twinkly Jesse James follows the identical tack, with hazy, cyclical guitar strains, descending artificial keys and an excellent 80s-themed solo from guitarist Hugh Harris.

At instances, the album remembers 80s New Wave and feels just like the Kooks taking up David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. Crusing on a Dream, which opens with a ska-inspired bass groove earlier than Pritchard enters with raspy, restrained vocals, is a whirring and futuristic delight, infused with synth keys, jazzy saxophone strains and the distant bend of twangy guitar. Stunning World, their collaboration with Milky Likelihood, who share vocal duties with frontman Pritchard, is an uplifting burst of indie cheer, with floaty vocals, sweeping guitar and scattered drumbeats. It’s this new iteration of the Kooks at their finest.
